The Cosumnes Fire Department provides ambulance transportation and pre-hospital care for the cities of Elk Grove and Galt; we also provide mutual aid transportation for Wilton, Herald, Courtland, and Walnut Grove.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division
These services are managed and coordinated by the Department's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division.
The Fire Department employs 151 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics. The Department operates 6 full-time ambulance companies.
This division is managed by Battalion Chief Brett Shurr and supported by a staff of an EMS Captain, a Performance and Development Coordinator, and an Administrative Assistant.
The EMS Lab, located at the Fire Department's Headquarters, offers state-of-the-art training equipment for continuing education and training for District and regional emergency medical service providers.
Battalion Chief Responsibilities
The EMS Battalion Chief is responsible for the overall management ambulance transport program, Advanced Life Support (ALS) engine program, and the Department’s Infection Control program.
Our EMS Captain is assigned to various projects/tasks/assignments which support the EMS Division. These assignments include maintaining supplies, EMS equipment maintenance, and assisting in training.
Performance & Development Coordinator Responsibilities
The Performance and Development Coordinator (PDC) is responsible for maintaining continuous quality control and quality assurance of the ALS and Basic Life Support (BLS) programs within the Fire Department.
The PDC's duties include development and delivery of advanced, topical, and current training in the EMT and paramedic programs, ensuring patient treatment is compliant with local protocols, policies and best practices, and maintaining an efficient and effective EMS peer review program.
